    KEY FRONT-END CIRCUITS IN MILLIMETER-WAVE SILICON-BASED WIRELESS TRANSMITTERS FOR PHASED-ARRAY APPLICATIONS

    Millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) phased arrays have been widely used in numerous wireless systems to perform beam forming and spatial filtering that can enhance the equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) for the transmitter (TX). Regarding the existing phased-array architectures, an mm-Wave transmitter includes several building blocks to perform the desired delivered power and phases for wireless communication. Power amplifier (PA) is the most important building block. It needs to offer several advantages, e.g., high efficiency, broadband operation and high linearity. With the recent escalation of interest in 5G wireless communication technologies, mm-Wave transceivers at the 5G frequency bands (e.g., 28 GHz, 37 GHz, 39 GHz, and 60 GHz) have become an important topic in both academia and industry. Thus, PA design is a critical obstacle due to the challenges associated with implementing wideband, highly efficient and highly linear PAs at mm-Wave frequencies. In this dissertation, we present several PA design innovations to address the aforementioned challenges. Additionally, phase shifter (PS) also plays a key role in a phased-array system, since it governs the beam forming quality and steering capabilities. A high-performance phase shifter should achieve a low insertion loss, a wide phase shifting range, dense phase shift angles, and good input/output matching.Ph.D

    Noise-induced stabilization of dynamical states in a non-Markovian system

    A Josephson junction subject to an external RF excitation may experience the inverse AC Josephson effect, where the phase across the junction locks to the drive. The resulting ``Shapiro steps'' of quantized voltage are currently utilized in primary voltage standards. The effect has also been a key technique in the search for topological superconductivity. Here, we study a particularly interesting regime in which the zero voltage state becomes unstable at zero DC bias, and the junction spontaneously develops the first Shapiro step with a voltage V=±ω/2eV=\pm \hbar \omega /2e. The switching time between the +ω/2e+ \hbar \omega /2e and ω/2e- \hbar \omega /2e states ranges from milliseconds to hours. Most interestingly, we find a surprising regime with a non-monotonic temperature dependence, in which the switching time demonstrates a pronounced minimum at intermediate temperatures. Tuning of the measurement parameters is also shown to give rise to a tristable switching behavior, showcasing the potential for further experiments in stochastic physics and quantum thermodynamics

    Crowdsourcing has been used to spur innovation and increase community engagement in public health programmes. Crowdsourcing is the process of giving individual tasks to a large group, often involving open contests and enabled through multisectoral partnerships. Here we describe one crowdsourced video intervention in which a video promoting condom use is produced through an open contest. The aim of this study is to determine whether a crowdsourced intervention is as effective as a social marketing intervention in promoting condom use among high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender male-to-female (TG) in China

    Catheter Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Previous Lobectomy or Partial Lung Resection: Long-Term Results of an International Multicenter Study.

    INTRODUCTION Data regarding the efficacy of catheter ablation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and patients' previous history of pulmonary lobectomy/pneumonectomy are scanty. We sought to evaluate the efficacy and long-term follow-up of catheter ablation in this highly selected group of patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty consecutive patients (8 females, 40%; median age 65.2 years old) with a history of pneumonectomy/lobectomy and paroxysmal or persistent AF, treated by means of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) at ten participating centers were included. Procedural success, intra-procedural complications, and AF recurrences were considered. RESULTS Fifteen patients had a previous lobectomy and five patients had a complete pneumonectomy. A large proportion (65%) of PV stumps were electrically active and represented a source of firing in 20% of cases. PVI was performed by radiofrequency ablation in 13 patients (65%) and by cryoablation in the remaining 7 cases. Over a median follow up of 29.7 months, a total of 7 (33%) AF recurrences were recorded with neither a difference between patients treated with cryoablation or radiofrequency ablation or between the two genders. CONCLUSIONS Catheter ablation by radiofrequency ablation or cryoablation in patients with pulmonary stumps is feasible and safe. Long-term outcomes are favorable, and a similar efficacy of catheter ablation has been noticed in both males and females

    Association of Adiponectin SNP+45 and SNP+276 with Type 2 Diabetes in Han Chinese Populations: A Meta-Analysis of 26 Case-Control Studies

    Recently, many studies have reported that the SNP+45(T>G) and SNP+276(G>T) polymorphisms in the adiponectin gene are associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in the Chinese Han population. However, the previous studies yielded many conflicting results. Thus, a meta-analysis of the association of the adiponectin gene with T2DM in the Chinese Han population is required. In the current study, we first determined the distribution of the adiponectin SNP+276 polymorphism in T2DM and nondiabetes (NDM) control groups. Our results suggested that the genotype and allele frequencies for SNP+276 did not differ significantly between the T2DM and NDM groups. Then, a meta-analysis of 23 case-control studies of SNP+45, with a total of 4161 T2DM patients and 3709 controls, and 11 case-control studies of SNP+276, with 2533 T2DM patients and 2212 controls, was performed. All subjects were Han Chinese. The fixed-effects model and random-effects model were applied for dichotomous outcomes to combine the results of the included studies. The results revealed a trend towards an increased risk of T2DM for the SNP+45G allele as compared with the SNP+45T allele (OR = 1.34; 95% CI, 1.11–1.62; P<0.01) in the Chinese Han population. However, there was no association between SNP+276 and T2DM (OR = 0.90; 95% CI, 0.73–1.10; P = 0.31). The results of our association study showed there was no association between the adiponectin SNP+276 polymorphism and T2DM in the Yunnan Han population. The meta-analysis results suggested that the SNP+45G allele might be a susceptibility allele for T2DM in the Chinese Han population. However, we did not observe an association between SNP+276 and T2DM

    Serum Levels of Adipocyte Fatty Acid-Binding Protein Are Associated with the Severity of Coronary Artery Disease in Chinese Women

    BACKGROUND: Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP) has been described as a novel adipokine, playing an important role in the development of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. In this study, we investigated the relationship between serum levels of A-FABP and the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in Chinese subjects. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Circulating A-FABP level was determined by ELISA in 341 Chinese subjects (221 men, 120 women) who underwent coronary angiography. A-FABP levels in patients with CAD were significantly higher compared with non-CAD subjects (P = 0.029 in men; P = 0.031 in women). Serum A-FABP increased significantly in multi-vessel diseased patients than in non-CAD subjects (P = 0.011 in men, P = 0.004 in women), and showed an independent correlation with coronary atherosclerosis index (standardized β = 0.173, P = 0.025). In multiple logistic regression analysis, serum A-FABP was an independent risk factor for CAD in women (OR = 5.637, 95%CI: 1.299-24.457, P = 0.021). In addition, amino terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) was demonstrated to be positively and independently correlated with A-FABP (standardized β = 0.135, P = 0.027). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Serum A-FABP is closely associated with the presence and severity of CAD in Chinese women
